It is good that you have considered yoga to maintain your weight.
Therapeutic suggestions for exercise/ yoga for weight loss require Body Mass Index so as to mention properly. You can calculate its formula - (weight in kg) ÷(height in metre)² and then reply here so that we can discuss more.
However, general suggestions are mentioned here : -
Weight disorders are generally because of toxicity in the body, acidity in the blood, intake of excessive calories as compared to whole day activities, hormonal imbalance (may be because of presence of stressors in life or lifestyle) and / or sedentary lifestyle.
- So, we need to work on any one of all of these factors, like to detoxify your body and minimise calories intake, you will need to take diet that detoxifies and has lesser calories (roughage diet to clean alimentary gut and with no calories - wheat daliya (broken wheat)), taking drinks having alkaline pH (e.g. lemon water, amla water, as well as check if your drinking water has alkaline pH).
- You can work on stressors if they are affecting your stress hormone levels which may be causing weight gain, so you need to focus on recreation activity as well as learn relaxation techniques like instant relaxation techniques, deep relaxation techniques, quick relaxation technique, or even yog nidra once a day will help you destress and reduce the effects of stresses in the body.
- As regards detoxification, in addition to diet, you can also go for naturopathy wherein you can take the help of nature cure like enema once-twice a week, abdominal mud pack, hot hip bath, or you can go even easy way through steam bath twice-thrice a week as per your requirement so that you can perspire and detoxify your body. But remember, you should hydrate first before steam bath. You can also use yoga therapy to detoxify your body - kunjal, jal neti and dhauti, if it is comfortable. Also please be aware that instant weight loss or excessive exercises to get instant results will harm instead of any benefits. Now, coming to your point of joining yoga exercise - either increase flexibility or directly join yoga session. This again depends on your BMI, and abdominal circumference. If you are beginner, you can first go through anti-rheumatic group of yogic exercises, which includes toe-bending, ankle rotation, half butterfly, full butterfly and hip rotation, hand bending, wrist bending, wrist joint rotation, elbow bending, shoulder socket rotation and neck movement. Basically, these are called pawanmuktasana series (refer to book - Asana, pranayama, mudra, bandha - Bihar School of Yoga). You can also exercise suksham vyayam (refer to book - Suksham Vyayama, by Swami Dhirender Brahmachaari). After 1-2 weeks, these exercises can be followed by Surya Namaskar. This will prepare you to go for yogasanas which will give you benefits then.
