If we break the word - Bhujangasana, its output is Bhujang and Asana. Bhujang is a Sanskrit word for “snake,” “serpent” or “cobra.” The word Bhujanga also refers to the Hindu snake god (Bhujanga Nag), who is worshiped at temples erected in his name in the city of Bhuj.    This is also mentioned in the texts for kundalini or shakti awakening which the Hindu Mythology presumes its residence at the base of the spine and when it is awakened through asanas and pranayama and mudra and mantras, it forcefully like a feminine snake goes up through the spine toward the ajna chakra to the sahsarara chakra leading to super consciousness and real knowledge.  Its english name is cobra pose being representing the snake.

Preparing for the Posture: (1) Here we are talking about bhujangasana which starts with the prone position. Prone position means that you are lying on the abdomen side on the floor or the mat.
(2) Now, bend both the elbows and place the palms on the floor by the side of the last rib bone.
Assuming the Posture: (3) Inhale slowly lift the head and then raise the chest. Feel the weight of the body at the lumbar region and maintain the position.
Coming back: (4) Now exhale and bring the chest and head down, touching the floor with the chin.
(5) Release the hands and place them above the head region on the floor come back to the position.
Do it for as long as per your own capacity. Bear the weight on the spine and not on the arms, otherwise the muscles of the arms and not the spinal muscles will not be exercised. Here we are meant to effect the spinal muscles and elasticity of the spine.
This bhujangasana is better for strengthening the spine and increasing the flexibility of the spine.  Thoracic muscles expand and tone up all the 31 pairs of spinal nerves.
