Michael, I have created some general dos and don'ts for practicing pranayama which can help you (although it is not fully comprehensive):
Dos:
- Start with a relaxed and comfortable seated position, such as cross-legged or in a chair.
- Make sure your spine is straight and your body is relaxed.
- Practice in a quiet and comfortable environment free from distractions.
- Begin with a few minutes of deep breathing to prepare your body and mind.
- Consult with a qualified yoga teacher or your doctor if you have any health concerns.
- Follow the instructions of the teacher or practitioner.
- Increase the duration of practice gradually over time.
- Practice on an empty stomach.
Don'ts:
- Don't practice pranayama if you are feeling ill or have a fever.
- Don't force or strain your breath during pranayama practice.
- Don't practice pranayama if you are pregnant or have any specific health issues.
- Don't overdo it by practicing for too long or too forcefully.
- Don't practice pranayama immediately after eating a heavy meal.
- Don't compare yourself to others and don't push yourself too hard.
It is important to note that pranayama should be practiced with proper guidance and under the supervision of a qualified teacher or practitioner. If you have any health concerns or conditions, it's important to check with a doctor before starting any pranayama practice.
