Are there any safety rules for breathing exercises?

  1. If you suffer from any respiratory disorder like asthma, emphysema, shortness of breath, etc., it is safe to consult your physician and get a clearance before practising the pranayama or any breathing exercise.
  2. There is a tendency of beginner students, that they push beyond the limits in any yogic practices. It is better that the practices are performed so that they are enjoyable. They should know their limits. If they proceed slowly and carefully, they can attain the objectives of pranayama. Remember slow and steady wins the race.
  3. Breathing exercises should never be pushed to the point of weariness or exhaustion.
  4. They should not be merely mechanical
  5. there should be no hurry or haste.
  6. Exercise should always be gentle and non-violent.
  7. Breathing should not be jerky or irregular, but smooth, steady and continuous.
  8. Pranayama should be conscious breathing. As long as we pay close attention to the reaction of the body during these practices, we have nothing to fear.
