If yoga is interpreted as limited to asanas, then asanas practice do not generate the lactic acid in the muscles. The lactic acid is responsible for muscle fatigue and pain which we feel during exercise.  During asanas, because of provision of relaxation post asana, there is no accummulation of lactic acid in the muscles and no fatigue. But in exercise, there is fatigue accummulation and hence, the pain and fatigue.

Yoga is lead by breath and holistic to practice, where as exercise is great in its own way which means physical strengthening.Yoga engaging with breath opens the inner channels and is more related to spirituality not with religion.Yoga adds physical, mental and spiritual connection and leads to relaxation.
