There are three classifications of asanas

(i) Based on purpose - meditative (for meditation - like padamasana, sukhasana, etc.), relaxing (for relaxation - makrasana, shavasana, shashankasana, etc), and cultural asanas (This group contains the largest amount of asanas. It is said that there are 84 lakhs yogasanas. And of these yogasanas, 84 are more important and among them, the four yogasanas are important, namely the siddhasana, padmasana, bhadrasana and simhasana).

(ii)Based on Initial Position: Standing Asanas (which are done while standing - tadasana, ekpadasana, kati-chakrasana, etc.), Sitting asanas (which are performed while sitting - Yoga mudrasana, padmasana, vakrasana, gomukhasana, etc.), Prone asanas (which are performed while lying on abdomen - shalabhasana, bhujangasana, etc.), and supine asanas (which are performed while lying on back - pawanmuktasana, uttanapadasana, shavasana, etc.).

(iii) Based on final position: Forward Bending asanas (flexion) like padahastana, paschmittonasana, etc., Backward bending asanas (extension) like chakrasana, shalabhasana, bhujangasana, Twisting asanas (katichakrasana, ardhmatsyendrasana, etc.), side /lateral bending - ardh-katichakrasana, trikonasana, etc.
