I am happy that you make this place a good platform for discussion - this gives me opportunity to relearn and refine my studies.

So, what are naadis?

Naadis are the astral tubes made up of astral matter which carries psychic currents. Vital force or prana flows these astral tubes. Since they are made up of subtle matter they cannot be seen by our physical eyes and these yoga naadis- astral tubes are not the ordinary nerves, arteries and veins that are defined antomically and physiologically. It is said that there are 72,000 naadis.  But these naadis and chakras are their manifestation in our physical body in the form of gross nerves and plexuses. Some scriptures have also said that there are more than 72,000 nadis.

When Kundalini is awakened, it passes through the sushumna naadi subject to purification of naadis. That is why the first step in kundalini yoga is to purify the naadis.

That's why yogis focus on naadi - shuddhi pranayama.

What are main nadis?

Out of 72,000 nadis, there are 14 naadis which are important –

  1. sushumna
  2. ida
  3. pingala
  4. gandhari
  5. hastajiva
  6. kuhu
  7. saraswati
  8. pusha
  9. sankhini
  10. payasvini
  11. varuni
  12. alambusha
  13. vishvodhara
  14. yasasvini

Out of the above naadis, there are three main naadis – Pingala, Sushmna and Ida – among which again Sushumna is chief naadi.

So, as discussed in our earlier answer, all naadis spring from the kanda which is the junction where from sushumna naadi is connected with the Muladhaara chakra and this kanda is 12 inches above the anus. So, it is understood that kanda is the centre of the astral body from where all naadis spring and carry the pranic energy to the different parts of the body.

So, How we can find kanda’s manifestation in the body?

If you are biology student, you will find that there is cauda equine in the gross physical body. The spinal cord extends from the brain to the end of the vertebral column and tapers off into fine silken threads. Before its termination, it gives off innumerable fibers crowded into a bunch of nerves. This bunch of nerves is called “Cauda Equine” in the gross body and this is the astral center of kanda.

I hope that you were mainly concerned with the above. If other things are missing, let me know, i will be happy to prepare here other explanations.
