I would like to refer to Mahrshi Patanjali's Yoga Sutra - Asanam Sthiram Sukham -which means that asana is that posture which is stable and comfortable. Obviously, if one practitioner either teaching or practising deviates from such sutra - comfort and stability zone or goes beyond that, it will not be called asana and will be treated as mechanical movement only which has no meaning in the texts of yoga.
Moreover, asana without awareness towards body, breathing and /or chakras does not serve its purpose. So, it is the movement other than yoga which may wreck your body.
