Kapalbhati is an ancient yogic breathing technique that has been practiced for centuries. It is believed to have many benefits, but research has shown that it can also be damaging to those with ulcer, which a sore on the lining of your stomach, small intestine or esophagus. A peptic ulcer in the stomach is called a gastric ulcer whereas if it in the first part of the small intestine (duodenum), it is called duodenal ulcer. Similarly, an esophageal ulcer occurs in the lower part of your esophagus. The practice of Kapalbhati involves rapid inhalation and exhalation of air, which can increase the production of digestive acids and worsen the symptoms of ulcer, i.e. further excessive increase in the acid can cause even bleeding in the ulcerative digestive tract. The increased air pressure can also cause pain in the abdominal area and further exacerbate the ulcer. Additionally, the practice of kapalbhati can cause dehydration, which can lead to further irritation of the ulcer. Therefore, it is important for those with ulcer to avoid kapalbhati and seek medical advice before engaging in any form of such practice.
