I am suffering from allergic rhinitis. If I use jalneti the water is not coming out through the other nostril on both sides due to nasal congestion. What should I do? Can I use neti to cure allergy?

The jala Neti/sutra neti would be helpful for allergic rhinitis which has the symptoms of watery, nasal discharge, sneezing, itching of eyes and increased eosinophil in blood. Jala neti and sutraneti help to clear the nasal secretions and opening the nasal passages. In addition, you can also use nature cure protocols under guidance of qualified nature cure practitioner which suggests cleansing of the internal system with a short fasts alongwith warm water enemas early in the morning to improve the immunity of the body. Under nature cure protocols, one can also use hot foot bath which helps relieving of congestion in the head region, heaviness in the head and other symptoms of cold.  Steam/sauna bath also helps which helps in elimination of toxins from the body.

To prevent frequent attacks of cold/rhinitis, as well as to improve your resistance, you can also take adequate quantities of vitamin C through citrus fruit juices, amla and guava. For this, you may also consult with your physician.

As regards your concern for water that does not coming from one side, in the beginning, it is o.k. if you are able to do jala neti through one nostril only. After some days, you will get success from both the nostrils (if there is no polyp or structural issue).  So, either keep continuing the practice for some days or try kapalbhati before attempting jala neti. You can also do warm up exercises before jala neti so that congestion, if any, in that nostril should come to minimum. You can also practice Sutra Neti to clear the nasal passages in both the nostrils so that the jala neti water flows easily across  both the nostrils.

Recommendations:

Neti Pot - Generally, Copper Neti Pots are recommended.  But now-a-days, good quality copper pots for neti are not available in the market, even at Amazon online market place - we could not find in the Amazon search for Copper Neti Pot. We tried with steel made neti pot too, and got disappointed with feedbacks thereof.  The neti pots are better available at any of your local Yoga Institute like Morarji Desai Institution of Yoga at New Delhi, etc. The one we found that at amazon is cheap , can be easy to keep during travelling is small plastic neti pot at amazon. That works fine.

If you want to use to quality ceramic neti pot, that is available by Himalayan Institute at amazon, but yes it is expensive, even beyond the copper neti pot, but it is very customized to the nostrils and handling while doing neti. We have good experience of it as we have been using it for a long time. But again do not forget that it is ceramic one, it has to be handled with care and can be broken.
