Let's learn easy way to do pawanmuktasana.

  1. Lie down on the supine position (spine on ground) keeping the legs together and stretch the hands straight about the head region, i.e. from toes to head. The entire body in a straight line. Palms facing the ceiling.. This is starting position of all asanas in supine position.
  2. Bend the both the knee and bring the thigh to the chest, simply clasp the arms around the knees for better compression of the body. Keep the toes stretched out.
  3. While exhaling the breath, raise the head and shoulders off the ground and try to touch the knee with nose. Remain in the final position for a few seconds and normalize the breath.
  4. With slowly inhaling, return to the starting position. Relax the body.

When the practitioner does the above posture and as the body is completely compressed extending its effect on the intestines, he is relieved of the gas accummulated in the intestines because of fermentation of the undigested food or remnant part after digestion in the intestines. That's why it is called Pawanmuktasana (Wind relieving Posture).

In addition to the helping in the issues of flatulence, pawanmuktasana strengthens the lower back muscles and loosens the spinal vertebrae. It massages the abdomen and the digestive organs and is, therefore, very effective in removing wind and constipation. By massaging the pelvic muscles and reproductive organs, it is also useful in the treatment of impotence, sterility and menstrual problem.
