I am writing on behalf of a 90 year old student in my Senior chair yoga class- very gentle. He is very stooped over but enthusiastic. The class is unfortunately scheduled soon after breakfast (I have no control over that timing). He reported to me yesterday that every class he finds himself belching the whole time (quietly, so not to disturb the others).  This does not happen on any other day but Yoga.  None of the other residents have this occurence.  Any insight?

That's great to see that nonagenarian person is interested in practice of yoga.  I salute to his enthusiasm and spirit not to disturb any persons in vicinity doing yoga.  I have suggestions for him to consider during yoga practices:

  1.     The discipline of yoga does not allow to immediately do the yoga exercises after meals. It always suggests to practice asanas and pranayamas on empty stomach. At this age, generally the digestion process is weak to assimilate the food taken in.  His age and meals just before yoga session are the cause for his belching.   Of course, he faces this problem on yoga day because it interferes with the digestion process.
  2.     It is not advisable to have a heavy meal shortly before he leaves for yoga sessions. Try to consume only light food that can be digested quickly and that does not take a toll on his metabolism.
  3.     If it is not avoidable, better to eat in very small quantities before practicing yoga.
  4.     At this age, there may be issues of teeth and he may not be able to masticate or chew the foods properly.  He should be suggested to chew 30-35 times each bite before engulfing it.
  5.     He can try breakfast of light and easily digestible fruits if he does not have any allergy to it. May be only then his belching issues can be resolved. Even fruit juice or vegetable soup can be part of his breakfast for easy assimilation.
  6.     Legumes, diary products, cabbage, broccoli, applies, frozen dinners, processed foods and bulky meals cause belching and so these should be avoided.
  7.     He may ensure that he goes to yoga session only after attending to natural calls.  Also, it is suggested that he should hydrate himself suitably with a glass of water in the morning upon waking, if it is medically suitable to him at this age.

I think this may help you. You may feel free to write here for more explanation.
